Synopsis

Yu, a teenager whose intimate boundaries were once broken, embarked on a year-long dialogue with the director. Nurtured by time and trust, Yu—a fellow creator herself—underwent a profound transformation. She channeled her deep, personal expressions into a force that connects with the world, sparking a moving evolution in her work: a rite of passage shifting from a narrative of pain to a gentle, collective dialogue. Through her imagery, she reveals the multifaceted layers of herself, transcending from "being gazed upon" to "gazing back at the world." Reclaiming the narrative through her own lens, she illuminates a path to coming of age—one that she names for herself.

Director Statement

Throughout production, it was a constant reality that the "unspoken" were, in fact, things Yu had already whispered to me in private. However, a profound shift occurs when such intimate sharing is translated into a public discourse. What begins as a tender embrace can inadvertently become a wound; exposure can easily devolve into exploitation. Much like the roots of trauma, documentary filmmaking is susceptible to dangerous power imbalances if it lacks self-reflection.

I chose to honestly expose my own presence—revealing my clumsy, stereotypical, and often pale questioning. This transparency transforms our private "Girl Talk" into a collaborative space where power is redistributed. Yu emerges as the sovereign interpreter of her own narrative. Through her artistic evolution and her rebuttals, the audience transcends the "director's" gaze to witness the authentic growth of a life coexisting with trauma. This film is a restitution of agency; it is a gentle yet firm attempt to bring private whispers into the public sphere while fiercely guarding the dignity of the soul.
