Synopsis
Beginning with rumors surrounding a tiger-shaped concrete statue in an artist village, the film drifts through nightscapes, fireworks, infrared imagery, and ritualistic actions. Within the ceramic workshop "Three men make a tiger," forms are repeatedly sculpted and transformed through subtle variations. Treating the image as a temporary dwelling place for spirits, the work asks: when a form can no longer be replicated, how can so-called realism still be sustained?
The Tiger God project was launched during the artist's residence at Hualien's Cien Art Village in 2021, when he heard from a Sikawasay (an Amis priest) that a concrete tiger figure in the institute was possessed by a soul. This experience has inspired her to explore the intersection of the Han people's folk beliefs and the Amis people's spiritual worldview, from which he further investigates the suppressed history of indigenous beliefs in Eastern Taiwan under colonial and religious persecution.
Director Statement
The fireworks were shot at night, representing the impact of external forces on the land, providing a reflection on the connections among concrete animals, mining exports, and colonial imagination. The concrete tiger figures were jointly made by a Sikasaway, an elder, and the artist. The tiger figures were placed at the depth of the field, sending a message of "not becoming a historical landmark." The ritual opera at the end of the film embodies the ritual's spirit by returning the footage to the land and the gods. This piece incorporates footage, a ritual, investigation, and research, exploring the way to tell the history and other possibilities of viewing and narrating among silent objects and in the night. An experimental documentary exploring ritual image-making, spiritual embodiment, and the instability of realism through Taiwanese folk belief practices.
