Szemző graduated from the Hungarian Academy of Music in Budapest, and has been writing, composing and performing music for 30 years.

As a Hungarian musician and also a filmmaker, Szemző has composed soundtracks for numerous films and documentaries of his own and others, such as Peter Forgács's series of documentaries entitled Paragraph 175), the winner of the Documentary Jury at the Sundance Film Festival and International Film Critic Award in the Berlin International Film Festival. Recordings of Szemző's music have been release on the HPS, Hungaroton, and Leo lables.

Szemző was also the founder of the acclaimed Hungarian modern ensemble Group 180 during the 1980s. His current performance group, the Gordian Knot, was founded in 1998.
