Synopsis
When Birdy was young, he was like a fledgling still learning how to fly. He needed care and nurturing from his family to grow strong, yet he didn’t want to grow into the person his family expected him to be.
Second Round is a coming-of-age documentary that intertwines Birdy’s gender transition with his inner emotional transformation—pulling back, pushing back, confusion, courage, fear, anxiety, and taking one last all-in gamble. We walk alongside Birdy through countless thoughts and struggles, witnessing a life crack open, grow, and ultimately find its way back to itself.
Director Statement
Whenever I mention that I’m making a film about transgender issues, people often assume it is about marginalized groups. But I have never seen Birdy that way. He is radiant, conflicted, stubborn, lonely, and full of desire—I see someone trying to grow up. This is not a film about gender issues, but about what it means to choose who you are when that choice conflicts with your parents’ expectations. Over four years, I have not been an observer, but a companion—witnessing his surgeries, listening, and growing alongside him. I believe documentary is not only about observing, but about accompanying. In form, I hope to move beyond explanation and invite the audience into his life, allowing them to grow with him.
