Synopsis
Against the backdrop of a demanding new ballet production, principal dancer Tzu-Chao Chou—Tzusy—prepares to debut a role on one of Britain’s most prestigious stages. Yet behind the poise is a journey that spans continents and identities.
The film traces his 20-year path from Taiwan to Australia and to becoming one of the few queer Asian principals in British ballet. As rehearsals progress, Tzusy reflects on what it means to be a gay immigrant carving space in a historically Western art form. Intimate moments at home reveal the quiet resolve that anchors him.
In a culminating solo, he transforms his story into movement. The film concludes with his return to Taiwan, mentoring young dancers and offering the legacy he once sought.
Director Statement
I once thought ballet was a foreign art form that could not take root in Taiwan. But after making Ballet in Tandem, I came to recognize its allure and potential through dancers who persist tirelessly despite limited resources and institutional support. This time, I want to focus on Tzu-Chao Chou—the only active Taiwanese principal ballet dancer. Traversing three continents, he masters the pointe technique traditionally reserved for female dancers as a queer Asian male, challenging ballet’s conventional boundaries of gender, ethnicity, and representation. On European stages, his body not only executes extraordinary technique but also raises questions about identity, tradition, and the future of Taiwanese dance. This documentary will follow his journey in dance across geographies and cultures, revealing both personal dedication and the evolving possibilities for dance in Taiwan.
