Synopsis
After twenty years of absence, director Elvis Lu returns home to his family. He comes back with the aim of facing the real motive of his departure - the stubborn belief in the powers of his elder brother, A-zhi, a psychic in the village. Lu documents day by day, realising that in the end, maybe the real wound in the family life is, in fact, his own departure.
Director Statement
All my life has been shaken and shaped by my family, a family that I didn't manage to and even refused to understand. That’s why I had been away from home for 24 years. It was a desperate resolution, which, I must admit, has brought me nothing but loneliness. Then, during the summer of 2017, my mother called me. It was something unexpected because we rarely spoke to each other. What was even more surprising was the reason for which she called: she wanted me to help arrange a photo shoot for a photo to be used at her funeral. This unexpected request awoke something deep inside me. She asked me to go back home, and I understood that she was getting ready to die. Suddenly, I felt that I wasn't ready to lose her, and I realized that I didn't have much time left to face the family problems that had haunted me for long. I decided to go back home and film our daily life like a family video that we had never had. This process has somehow eased the feeling of anger and emptiness that I had in myself for so long. Coming back to my family was complicated, but it somehow also pushed me to come back towards myself.
