Synopsis
Due to rapid urbanization and progress, Taichung has become advanced and prosperous. There remain, however, children who are either ill or have disabilities and who cannot keep pace with such changes. These children need a space of their own and a helping hand to assist them moving forward.
Dr. Don Nicholls and Dr. Chuang Hong-tat are two good doctors who, for over 40 years, have used patience and sacrificed their careers to help build a caring world for these children. Dr. Nicholls, who is originally form Australia, established the Ling Kuang Hospital in Taichung in 1962 to care for children suffering from polio and cerebral palsy. In 1988, Dr. Chuang created the Maria Social Welfare Foundation, Maria Wufen Caring Home, Maria Home for Disabled Children, and Taichung Home of Charity Operated by Maria. Today, Dr. Chuang continues to care for 1,500 children at the Maria Social Welfare Foundation. While healthy children are able to sing and dance, children at the Maria Social Welfare Foundation labor to learn to eat on their own, walk, and speak. Due to their illness and disabilities, these children are often times shy; doubt and uncertainly linger in their world. However, as one enters their world and gets to understand these children, one gets to see their innocence and pureness, as well as the ray of love and hope that they project amid this bustling city.
