Taiwan is a country that has built its fortune on electronic components. Thirty years ago, when Taiwan was experiencing birthing pains in its transition from an agricultural to an industrial society, forty young men from middle class families were sent to RCA in America on training programs in order to develop Taiwan's burgeoning electronics sector. At the same time, some twenty thousand females were hired to work at RCA factories located outside Taipei City. Cut to thirty years later. The young men who were initially sent to the USA have become leading figures in electronic companies such as TSMC and UMC, and have been credited with the growth of Taiwan's economy, while two thousand female factory of RCA workers have become the victims of various forms of cancer, brought on by their risky work.
