Synopsis
After the farewell party is over, Mr. Chui's dreams will vanish in a puff of smoke. Li-Feng coalmine, located in Taipei County, was the largest coal pit in Taiwan. However, following the government's opening up of the foreign coal trade and entry in WTO, Li-Feng was unable to compete with imported cheaper coal, and the pit was forced to close down in October 1990, leaving 118 miners with no livelihood. Farewell Party documents the closing days of the pit. Shot over two years, the camera follows the men as they plunge into an intrinsic maze of tunnels and the burly 70-year-old lady who cooks for them after a long hard days work. Her no-nonsense approach, tinged with warmth and humor, has endeared her to the filmmaker set out to capture the miners' optimistic philosophy and their attempts to look for the next stage in life.
