Taiwan is located at the western border of the Pacific Ocean. Despite being surrounded by oceans, residents on the island led an almost land-locked life pattern due to the prevailing political climate. After the lifting of martial law and massive changes in social structure, Taiwan residents returned to the sea only to find the marine environment afflicted. “The Squid Daddy’s Labor Room” is a documentary film that depicts the moving story of people returning to the ocean, discovering the issues, engaging in introspection and taking actions to make amends.

A marine conservation team led by conservationist Tao-Jen Kuo has built the first-ever breeding ground for oval squids in the Northeast Coast of Taiwan, one that integrates marine life with restoration, researches, education, tourism and industry values. Yet the society at large is mostly unaware of the sacrifices, frustrations and conflicts encountered by Kuo and his team during the process. As the fishermen celebrate their abundant catches, the technology and concept behind the breeding ground, as well as the story of this group of volunteers, are also being recorded.
