Synopsis
Dancing in the light-A Retrospective on Early Taiwan Cinematography took two years to complete. It is both an homage to the work of the first generation of Taiwan's cinematographers and a history of Taiwanese film and culture, breathlessly spanning World War II to the 1980's. Early Taiwanese cinematographers-whose voices appear on the soundtrack-were at the cutting edge of Taiwanese art, culture and politics. They brought with them a fresh approach to shooting, totally alien to accepted Western practices. This is the first time some of this footage has been released from the vaults of the National Film Archive since it was first shown all those years ago. This is also the first film to present a clear and authoritative portrait of Taiwan's troubled film industry.
