Synopsis
"Wang Kun-Wei: Pursuing Dreams on the Frontier" is a sports documentary that focuses on Taiwanese futsal player Wang Kun-Wei. Through his experiences abroad, the film reveals the structural challenges of Taiwan's football system and the difficult choices athletes face under real-world pressures.
Centering on the theme of "a football dream from the margins," the documentary follows a young player from Xiao Liuqiu who pursues his passion for football despite limited resources and an unstable professional system. His journey is one of solitude and determination.
Wang Kun-Wei is one of the few active players still in their prime. His story is a struggle between dreams and harsh realities—reflecting the long-standing fragility and marginalization of Taiwan’s football infrastructure.
Director Statement
As a former football player myself, I share similar experiences with the subject of the film, yet our paths have diverged drastically. Through my body, mindset, and understanding of the sport, I interpret Kun-Wei’s story both personally and through the lens of a camera. I highlight his unique connection and interaction with football—using slow-motion shots to closely observe his movements, while drawing from my own past on the field to explore the deeper fears that lie within an athlete’s heart. In the past, I fought on the pitch; now, I gaze through the camera at Kun-Wei’s unwavering commitment to the game. Through situational observations and conversations across different settings, I document his journey as a professional player. I will continue to follow Kun-Wei during his training and matches, paying particular attention to his interaction with the ball—capturing the special bond he shares with football. In work, leisure, and practice environments, I aim to uncover how he navigates the emotional intensity of competition while managing the fatigue of real life. From this, I seek to reveal his character and the challenges he faces on this solitary and uncertain path.
