In the late 1940s, the filmmaker Shiang-Chu Tang’s father fled Mainland China with Chiang Kai Shek and the Nationalist troops to Taiwan as Mao’s communist party took hold of the Mainland. Over forty years later, and recovering from a debilitating stroke, he was allowed to return to his homeland. How will he react to life is his former country and the changes wrought by communist governments. How will his relatives react to him-after so many years of forced exile? Juxtaposed with his father’s visit, is the birth of the filmmaker’s son. These stories interweave to dramatic effect-as his father makes the long journey from rural Taiwan to industrial Mainland China, stopping off at Hong Kong along the way. Complete with a sentimental musical score-lifted from an old Chinese movie-this film is a breath of fresh air.
